16th Annual Van Metre Five-Mile Run for Children's Hospital has Record Turnout

BROADLANDS, VA / March 15, 2008

The 16th Annual Van Metre Five-Mile Run for Children's Hospital took place on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at the Broadlands Marketplace. Participants from all ages and locations came together to enjoy fitness, fun, and beautiful weather in order to support Children's Hospital. The race was a huge success with 765 total participants. Of the 765 participants, 598 ran the Five-Mile race and 167 ran the One-Mile Fun Run. There were 8 corporate teams that entered the race and Van Metre's own Mt. Vernon Athletic Club came in second place in the Co-ed Corporate Team!

The Albert G. Van Metre Sr. "Mark , Set , Go" trophy was awarded to the overall fastest runner in the race, Steven Crane of Silver Spring, Maryland, who finished the 5 mile in 24:15!

The 5 Mile Run raised $72,000 for the Children's National Medical Center, thanks to the generous support of many of our business partners. Rick Rabil, President of Van Metre Companies, presented the check to Dr. Mary Donofrio from Children's Hospital. Dr. Frank Midgely ran the race again this year and is proud to say he has run all 16 races! Danielle Weaver and Dr. Donofrio presented Rick with a framed picture of a past years race commemorating Al Van Metre, Rick and the Van Metre Companies for establishing the Van Metre Cardiovascular Operating Suite in honor of Dr. Frank Midgley.

Ninety volunteers participated in the race registration, course set-up, and clean up beginning Thursday evening and finishing early Saturday morning. Most of the volunteers were employees or owners of the Van Metre Companies, along with their family members and friends. The race would not have been such a great success without the help from this group of individuals.
